Surjewala Alleges ‘Political Vendetta’ as Karnataka Governor Sanctions CM Prosecution
In a strongly worded statement, Randeep Singh Surjewala, General Secretary in charge of Karnataka for the Indian National Congress, has accused the Modi government of engaging in “political vendetta” against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The controversy stems from the Karnataka Governor’s decision to grant sanction for prosecution against CM Siddaramaiah. Surjewala claims this move is part of a “brazen political conspiracy” orchestrated by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Home Ministry in Delhi.
According to Surjewala, the Governor, whom he repeatedly refers to as a “puppet” of the BJP, has acted unconstitutionally and in direct opposition to the will of Karnataka’s voters. The Congress party won a decisive mandate in the 2023 Assembly Elections, which Surjewala argues the BJP has been unable to accept.
The Congress leader outlined what he sees as a three-pronged strategy by the BJP:
- An attempt to subvert the electoral mandate using the Governor’s office.
- An attack on the Congress government to halt the implementation of five key guarantees benefiting over five crore Kannadigas.
- A targeted assault on backward classes, SC/ST, and marginalized sections by tarnishing the image of Siddaramaiah, whom Surjewala describes as “India’s senior-most Backward Class Chief Minister.”
Surjewala also alleged that the Governor is colluding with a “known blackmailer” to attack the elected government and the Chief Minister.
The Congress party has vowed to fight these allegations both legally and in the court of public opinion. Surjewala expressed confidence that the truth would prevail, ending his statement with “Satyamev Jayate” (Truth Alone Triumphs).
